Summer vacation is great, right? I mean all those excited runs out to the ice cream truck and running around in the warm rain and staying up way too late and... driving Mommy a little crazy. Going back to work and having the kids at home 24/7 and an insane number of birthday parties, weekend trips, church meetings, and other obligations meant that I have not had much time to myself. And by "not much" I mean zero.
So a couple of weeks ago, figuring my other mommy friends felt the same way, I threw a little shindig at my house. I kicked Davis and the girls out (they went camping... at their cousin's house - it's too hot for real camping!) and sent out invitations
made some pizza (retro pepperoni and mushroom on one, olive oil with roasted garlic, sundried tomatoes, and fresh shaved parmesan on the other), cracked open some wine and beer
put on a wicked good movie
got all gussied up
and had a lovely evening of just sitting and talking girl talk with some of my besties. By the next day I was missing my kiddos and feeling rejuvenated. Then I was a good mommy, wife, and worker again.

Where I Am
At work, at home, running errands, anywhere but on my computer...
Henry is so fun right now!! He's sitting up really well and really learning how to play. And he squawks and laughs and blows spit bubbles constantly. He's such a happy little guy. I love him to pieces and totally forgive him for being a bad sleeper.
He's still working on that first tooth - for months now he's been drooling and chewing on everything. He loves when I give him very cold cucumbers to chew on
He's been so much fun at dinnertime. Tonight he chewed on some turkey tenderloin and he made the funniest little caveman (cavebaby?) sounds. Another favorite - bananas
In other news, Amelia got glasses. She's got an astigmatism - we got her eyes checked six months ago, because she squints a lot. Her doctor said she could just wear them or not, if she wants to. So far she really only wears them while watching TV, which isn't that often. But they're so cute (sorry for the bad picture)
Sophia has the busiest social calendar of any five year old I know. There are so many parties and watermelon socials and meet the teacher and other events in preparation for Kindergarten (also - the number of FORMS that go into putting your kid into school, WOW). Lots of fun!

Love, Love, Love x Infinity
Henry is so lucky to have such great sisters. I'm so lucky to have such great kiddos. Believe me, I do thank God every single day for these sweet babes.

Look!
What popped up right outside our bedroom window! A giant sunflower! That's Davis standing up next to it! It's such a happy thing to wake up and see every morning!

Good Night!
Okay I know last week I wrote about how all our routines and bedtime strictness has gone out the window during Summer Vacation, but it's time to get back in gear. Kindergarten starts in one month!! Plus, everyone in the house is happier when bedtime routines are in full swing.
Sophia's bedtime routine has been essentially the same since the day we brought her home from the hospital, and it works well for us. We've just gradually been adding more kids into the mix, but that hasn't thrown things off too much.
We usually eat dinner around 6 pm. I get home from work around 5:30 pm and feed Henry and then cook, so pretty much everything I cook can be made in less than 30 minutes. I actually love cooking and miss those meals that take all afternoon - I try to make them on weekends sometimes, but for the most part my all-day cooking days are over (for now).
After dinner, the girls get a bath together. Sometimes I throw Henry in there too. It's nice now Sophia can wash herself, and Amelia can with just a little help. After bath we pile onto my bed and I rub them down with yummy calendula baby oil (my mom used this on me when I was a baby!) and brush their hair, and they get in their pajamas. Then they get vitamins and milk and I read them each one picture book. Henry loves Brown Bear - don't all babies?!
(See how tired I look? This is the time of day that I'm wrestling with wanting to eek out every ounce of joy, being with my babies who I've missed all day, and counting down the minutes until they're asleep so I can slip out of my work clothes and snuggle up on the couch with my honey and a glass of wine or the remote control and my laptop or just a pillow!)
Then Daddy brushes their teeth (he is in charge of all oral hygiene and dental appointments - I'm horrible in this department. Don't ask me when I went to the dentist last. WELL before I had kids. Sorry Dr. Penna if you're out there, I'm sure my mom will freak out and make an appointment for me to come see you next time I'm in California visiting her!)
Then I tuck Amelia in. We say her prayers and snuggle for a minute. Sophia used to go to bed at this time too (around 7) but she started bugging Amelia, so now she stays up another 20 minutes or so. Sophia and I read a chapter out of her chapter book while I nurse Henry one more time, then she helps me get him into bed. Then I snuggle her up and say her prayers with her. Sophia says "good night, sleep tight, don't let the bugs bite at night." Lights out.
Everyone has to be asleep by 8pm or mommy gets crabby.

Adventures in Baby Weaning
Wikipedia says "Weaning is the process of gradually introducing a mammal infant, either human or animal, to what will be its adult diet and withdrawing the supply of its mother's milk." And that's just what it is - a gradual process of changing baby's food source. I'm a big believer in putting off solid foods as long as possible and most of all to follow baby's cues when it comes to this process.
Sophia was just in the biggest hurry ever, while Amelia wanted nothing to do with anything but milk until she was almost 9 months old. Henry is following in Sophia's footsteps - he has been so anxious to join in our meals for about a month. He watches us very intently when we eat, he reaches and reaches for our food, he drools and smacks his lips and chews on his tongue.

Finally this past weekend, we decide to let him try some of our food - and he was so excited!

We're not big on the ol' baby rice cereal route, for lots of reasons. White rice really isn't very healthy (here's an article, if you're into that sort of thing), plus it's terribly bland and boring. When I had massive gall stone attacks, they told me to eat baby rice cereal until my surgery, and it was icky! The girls had bananas + breastmilk and avocado as their first foods. Much more yummier :)
With Henry we're trying the route of "babyled weaning" - which is just a way of skipping pureed food altogether. Basically, the theory is that developmentally, once babies are ready for solids foods (sitting up being a big part of this!) they can self-feed themselves with large chunks of food. Other than common allergy-inducing foods, they can pretty much eat what we eat. I'm certainly no expert, and there is lots of information out there (oh look, Wikipedia has an article on it). The idea of skipping purees works well for us, because we're lazy like that. Both the girls went from homemade mashed up foods to just chomping on "real" food within a couple of months. Here is Sophia chowing down on a barbecue sandwich at 10 months

Plus we almost always sit down and eat together as a family, and generally eat a healthy diet, so it just fits for us. Henry agreed! Day One he got avocado slices and loved them.

Day Two he got some broccoli. This was our dinner, so before salting our steamed fresh organic broccoli, I set a couple of pieces aside for Henry - doesn't get much easier than that!

(steak bites, mushrooms in red wine, smashed red potatoes with sour cream and kosher salt, steamed broccoli - this meal took less than 20 minutes to make)

He would watch us eat ours, and then bring it to his mouth and make the funniest faces! At this stage, they really don't ingest very much at all. The saying is "food is for fun before age one" - basically they are just learning how to eat right now, and exploring textures and tastes, and solids don't become nutritionally important until after 12 months.

Today we went back to his favorite (ha!) avocado.

I think tomorrow we might try a yummy mango I picked up at Whole Foods. Keeping the peels on helps him hold on, so we're definitely sticking with organic. It's been nice to all sit at the dinner table and have Henry feel like he's part of the action! He's my Little Baby Bumpkin, and I'm certainly not in any hurry for him to grow up. But after about the fifth time that he actually grabbed food from my hand and tried to eat it, I decided he was ready.

Painting the Town Red
and purple and blue and green....
Sidewalk paint: put equal parts corn starch and water in a jar, add food coloring (the plain old cheap dropper kind) and shake until mixed.

Camera Phone
Until recently, I had a boring ol' Blackberry with no camera. Now I have a boring ol' Blackberry with a camera. But I never remember to take the pictures off my phone. And then I do...

When It's Too Hot
Sophia set up an ice cream stand on our front porch (family only - she cleaned her scoop between servings by licking it)
Chocolate? Vanilla? Butter Pecan? Strawberry? Chocolate syrup? Sprinkles? Cone or... cone?

Art Class
Sophia was having some troubles, after her friends started making comments about her birthmark and scars at a birthday party a few weeks ago. She was just bummed and down on herself for several days. So we signed her up for a summer art class to boost her confidence - since she LOVES art and has always been good at it.
Her art teacher was made for Sophia! On the first day of class, Miss Debbie said "I'm an artist, so whatever happens is fine with me, I'm just the most laid back person you'll ever meet. And sometimes the art will look like it was originally supposed to, and sometimes the project will go in a different direction, and that's fine too." Sophia Heaven!
This past week, Sophia wanted us to stay in the room with them, and Miss Debbie was sweet to let Amelia participate too. The kids got a pile of wood scraps and made animal sculptures (the teacher hot glue gunned), then decorated them with felt and feathers and beads. It was GREAT!
This is Sophia's giraffe LuLu
And Amelia's turtle Wucy
And our collective bird Strawpizza
I had so much fun, I want to take an art class too!

Happy Independence Day!
Happy Birthday America!
Maybe because I'm an immigrant and don't take it for granted for a minute, or just because I'm feeling sentimental today, but I love this country and cried straight through our very patriotic church service this morning. After the service, they had a patriotic sing-a-long with songs like Grand Ol' Flag, most of which Sophia knew better than I did (thanks school!) Then we had a big barbecue and picnic on the church grounds, which was fifty shades of wonderful - all those sweet kiddos running around in their red white and blue!! I should have pictures, but I don't - I was too busy visiting with friends and semi-supervising my children. And eating hamburgers and potato chips and cole slaw and watermelon!
Tonight, we wandered down to the river and waited for it to get dark. Being outside at dusk is so magical, and normally we are all wrapped up in eating dinner and having baths and reading stories and getting snuggled up in pajamas to notice - so it's a rare treat to be outside when everything turns a lovely shade of blue. And that first wishing star appears. And everything just glows.
Sophia and I are reading the Little House on the Prairie books (and her Daddy is an archeologist - the same one who made them walk up the Indian mounds in the rain) so we had to stop at the Historic Arkansas Museum to see a real, old log cabin.
We wandered, sat on fountains, waved pinwheels.
Henry was there with his fat little feet.
Amelia took a brief nap on the pavement (don't be mad at me - we were in a safe little spot, away from the hustle and bustle with a great view, and she did have a folded up dress under her head for a cushion!)
I was there too, with Sophia who was silly with anticipation.
And then when dark came, and the Arkansas Symphony played at the outdoor amphitheater below us - fireworks!
One of those many experiences that had lost some of its magic over the years... until I got the joy of experiencing it with my children. It was all ooh's and aah's and pure delight, and I couldn't help but be completely wowed by the experience, as if they were MY first fireworks!
After the show we headed home
and Henry did what we all wanted to do.
