Now that I've tried it on two separate kids, I can say: I have a cure for diaper rash. As long as I kept them pretty dry and used Aquaphor, my kids weren't very prone to diaper rashes until the 12-18 month age, and then they got them BAD. Both have woken up some mornings with diaper rash so bad it was bleeding in areas :(
I have tried EVERY home remedy and diaper rash cream out there, yes even the $14 a tube creams. Luckily this cure isn't that expensive (Aquaphor is expensive, but goes a long way and is worth its weight in gold!)
So here it is: cover the area THICKLY with Desitin Creamy. Then slather a THICK layer of Aquaphor on top of it. Do this at every diaper change and within a few hours, the rash should be cleared up.
The Aquaphor keeps the Desitin on there long enough to do its job (otherwise it just gets rubbed off as soon as the diaper goes on) and really protects the area from any moisture. I have yet to encounter a diaper rash that didn't clear up with this method (knocking on wood furiously, because lately I've had bad luck making statements like that LOL!)
While I'm on this Aquaphor commercial :-) let me add another quick tip, from our plastic surgeon... if your kid (or you) has a scar, this is a good way to fade it nicely. As soon as it is healed, massage it with Aquaphor to keep it soft. We do this with all of Sophia's scars immediately after her bath - I just put some Aquaphor on my finger and massage them for a few minutes each. They are fading beautifully and the older ones (~2 years old) are almost not noticeable anymore.

We fought the same fight with our middle child -- and I had a Dr. actually recommend exactly what you said here. I didn't know there were different types of Desitin -- but the 40% zinc oxide is the key. And CVS and Wal-greens actually carries it in the generic. And it works just as good! So glad you found this. We were exhausted by it by the time we found it. Then there are yeast infections...that is another story. That was the hard thing for us...having both at the same time! The moisture from the creams would feed the yeast..but without it...the rash would flare!
