Road Tripping With Kids!

Oh boy, this post took me only a whole week longer to write than I had planned.  Last week was killer - nothing like a week of blissful vacation to create a nightmare when you get home, right? Monday I had nonstop meetings from 6:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 600 emails to catch up on at work! Insanity!  So, unedited pictures and probably lots of typos, but I am submitting this post!

I am excited to share with you some things I learned planning our road trip to the beach!  A LOT of planning went into this trip, obviously because I wanted to have a fun, relaxing vacation without tears. But more than that, honestly, I spend MONTHS looking forward to this trip - there were some very stressful weeks this spring and summer at work, and rather than lying awake at night thinking about that, I would lie there at night and think about what I would pack, or what I would bring for the kids in the car, when we finally went away to the beach...

And here's what I came up with! I am happy to report that, truly, we had a very pleasant trip ~ with four kids ages 7, 5, 2, and 8 months.  We hit some crazy traffic in Alabama, so overall we were in the car for 15 hours with only one hour break!

Okay, let's start with the girls...

I was VERY excited to find this bin thing to go between the girls' seats in the third row of our Expedition (Sophia is in a booster seat, and Amelia is in a GIANT Britax Regent car seat, and this fit PERFECTLY between the two).
I also love that it fastens to the seat, so it stays put and I don't have to worry about it flying around if we have to brake hard.

I loved that the top was hard, so they could use it like a table.  Each girl had a cup holder for water bottles, lots of little pockets on the sides for gum, chapstick, etc. and then a very big compartment inside for lots of goodies.

Photobucket

Normally, I am ALL about sharing things and I really try not to encourage all that "this is mine, that is yours" business between the girls.  But life is life, and two sisters 19 months apart will fight over ANYTHING if they are together long enough... say, for example, in a car for 15 hours.  SO, I came up with a color-coding system for our trip.  Everything green is Sophia's and everything pink is Amelia's (their favorite colors).  Blue was Henry and orange was Wyatt.  I bought these little mini round stickers and stuck them on EVERYTHING.  Every little snack pouch, every individual pencil, everything had those stickers on them.  And it worked!  Not a single fight.

Photobucket

So, in that big black box, the girls had little packs of trail mix, Poptarts (we leave at 4:00 a.m. while the kids are sleeping, then when they wake up 2-3 hours later, they get to eat a breakfast treat that they don't normally get at home ~ that keeps them happy for another little while!), packs of gum, fruit snacks, and water bottles.  Oh and Cheetos ~ this is a (gross) road trip tradition in our family.  It was nice not to have to dole out snacks.

For sleeping, I got these for the kids, and they loved them.  This was especially nice for Sophia, who has complained that it is much harder to sleep in her booster seat than a 5-point harness.

Photobucket

I made little binders for each of the girls to put in the big black bin.  I got these 5x8 inch binders and made one for each girl.

Photobucket

On the inside, I stuck a little piece of hard cardboard that they could use to put behind pages they were coloring for a hard surface.

Then I put pencil holders in each one.  No crayons in a hot car! And no I wasn't kidding - each pencil had a green or pink dot on it!

Photobucket

I made some laminated pages that could be used and re-used with a dry erase marker.  I hot glue-gunned a pom pom (oh yes, pink and green!) on each one, which the girls could use as an eraser - this worked great!

Photobucket

The first item in the binder, was a laminated sheet that showed our trip.  I numbered milestones along the way - (1) home, (2) welcome to Louisiana, (3) welcome to Mississippi, (4) lunch in Hattiesburg, (5) welcome to Alabama, and (6) condo.  It was great to be able to just refer to those when the kids asked where we were or how much farther.

Also, I made little clippies out of clothespins, which I clipped to the visor in the front seat.  If the kids were being good, their clippies stayed up.  If they were crying, whining, fighting, etc. their clippies came down.  If their clippies were up when we reached one of our milestones, they would get $1 to buy a treat at the next stop.  Only one clippy came down the whole trip! (Henry, of course)

Photobucket

Behind the map, I had a roadtrip bingo game that I found online, which I also laminated so they could play and erase.

Then a tic tac toe sheet, also laminated.

And then the rest of the pages were all different coloring sheets, word searches, and other simple games I found online and just copied and printed. I didn't laminate those, they just colored them in with their color pencils.  I also had some blank pages at the end for them to doodle on.

They also each had their Leapsters, my old camera (to share), an iPod Touch (to share), and a bunch of books.  I also found this travel memory game, which was GREAT! I also ordered some of these sticker books for the girls.

Photobucket

Honestly, this was WAY more stuff than they needed! We could have probably driven twice as far.  It's been kind of nice, when we've been in the car since our trip, the kids have been really happy, playing with their binder and stuff.

Henry was surprisingly happy too.  For him, I just used one of these stroller clips to attach his little backpack to the door handle on his door so he could reach it and it wouldn't spill.  I put a sippy cup of water in the cup holder on his car seat.  Then he got snacks, books, sticker books, and toys like Matchbox cars and trains and toy dinosaurs in the backpack.

Photobucket Photobucket

He also loved this and this and this sticker book.

He was also really happy to just watch trucks and trains along the way.

And when we were stuck in traffic, he got the iPod and was perfectly entertained the rest of the way.  I will do a post at some point about good apps for toddlers and preschoolers ~ there are some really great, educational ones out there that the kids love.  Henry learned his colors from one on this trip!

Photobucket

Oh and the Magnadoodle! How can I forget that... all time BEST entertainment for toddlers.  All of my kids have loved these at this age.  Henry is obsessed with Blues Clues right now, and he calls this is "notebook" :)

Photobucket Photobucket

Wyatt, well, he's just happy.  He is.  All the time.  I nursed him and changed him a couple of times, and he had this robot, which he LOVES, but mostly he was just his normal happy, laid back self!

Photobucket

I am pretty strict about limiting stops when we are on the road.  I make sure we have everything packed and organized in the car (I made a binder for us, too, with maps, a menu from the restaurant we were stopping at, stamps for postcards, and all the information on the condo, etc.) and the car full of gas, and then I don't stop except for planned stops and emergencies.  When we stop for gas, I make everyone get out and go to the bathroom and get anything they might need/want.  Except for the big traffic jam at the end, we were actually ahead of schedule all the way!

And on the way down, we never even used the DVD player - the kids were happy with their toys and binders and books, and we played a few road trip games. Happy, happy memories!

Things I Love ~ Postpartum Wardrobe

Third in my series of favorite things (click to see Part I and Part II) is about postpartum clothes. I know everyone who's had a baby just groaned when reading that. It's HARD to dress yourself right after you have a baby! Your body a freaky shape and you feel tired and can hardly find the time to shower, plus when you finally do get an outfit together, baby poops on you. Right?

For me, the perfect postpartum outfit (1) is comfortable enough to nap in, (2) is nursing-friendly, (3) hides the pooch enough that people aren't constantly asking "when's your baby due?", and (4) makes you feel pretty. #4 is important - recovering from birth and being sleep-deprived are downers, feeling pretty lifts you up!

My #1 momiform right after having Wyatt was the Dria Cover + maternity skinny jeans. I have never used nursing covers, because I think they draw more attention to the fact that you're nursing and I've just found them awkward. But the Dria is different, because it's a poncho you can wear anytime. It is SO comfy. Plus, having a toddler around changes things a little - I can be nursing discretely and suddenly have to get up to keep the toddler from throwing all the bags of Starbucks coffee in their trash can. Not that that ever happened.

Oslo Dria Nursing Cover $59; Three Seasons Maternity Skinny Jeans - Amazon $50;
Mossimo Supply Slouchy Boots - Target $29.99

I am so happy those skinny jeans don't fit me anymore, because I wore. them. out. after I had Wyatt. Here I am one week postpartum - same jeans:

Photobucket
525 America Hoodie Poncho - on sale now Amazon $50

Also prominent in my postpartum wardrobe has been leggings. When your belly is all poochy and you have porn star boobs, showing off that your legs are still somewhat normally shaped is a good thing. Plus - SO COMFY! My favorites are American Apparel, in lots of colors. Pair with a nursing cami (favorite is Glamourmom long with a built-in bra) and a loose t-shirt, tunic, shirt dress, or sweater, and you're ready to go! 6 weeks postpartum:

Photobucket
Cardigan - Target sale $19; Blouse - Old Navy sale $7.99; Flexees Fat Free Dressing Tank Top - Amazon $38; Matty M Leggings - Dillards $48; Boots - Target $24.99

Here's an outfit I've put together with cheap, versatile pieces that can be remixed. I'm not a fan of spending lots of money on postpartum clothes, since [hopefully] they won't fit for long!

Leggings - American Apparel $32; Flowy shirt - Old Navy $32.94; Boots - Target $29.99; Earrings - Etsy $18
(pair with white Glamourmom Long Bra Nursing Camisole)

I do believe in investing in one nice dress that makes breastfeeding easy. Low-cut, stretchy non-nursing dresses work well. Like these

Electric Plum Bell Sleeve Dress - Isabella Oliver $159;
Suzi Chin for Maggy Boutique Dolman Jersey Dress - Nordstrom $138

Everyone feels prettier in a dress, right? And pretty = happy.

I actually bought a nursing dress for the first time ever, and I love it - I wear it to work or church at least once a week. It's as comfy as a nightgown, but looks adorable with boots and is easy to dress up for church or pair with a jacket for work:

Photobucket
Japanese Weekend D&A Bamboo Twist Front Nursing Dress - Figure 8 $96

Now that I'm back to work, and working hard to loose the belly pooch, my wardrobe is shifting again, but those were the pieces that carried me through my first eight weeks. I just can't stress enough how important it was for my happiness to wear clothes that were comfy AND made me feel pretty. I'm proud to say I only wore yoga pants out of the house one time :)

I need to give a shout-out to my absolute FAVORITE fashion blog right now, aimed squarely at mamas like me. Ain't No Mom Jeans is full of fabulous ideas. Check it out - they have of lots of great tips and are much more adorable-er than me!

Things I Love ~ Baby Christmas Gifts

This is the second of my posts about some of my favorite things. Here is the first.

Baby Wyatt is my youngest Christmas baby, and the first time I have had a little one too small to enjoy toys at Christmastime. Plus, with four kids, we really have more baby toys than we need. I asked Sophia what she thought Santa might bring a little baby, and she nailed it!

Some of our favorites are below, with Wyatt to show them off :)

Wyatt's "big" gift was a baby book by Rag & Bone Bindery. Sophia has one from the same company, and I love it.

Photobucket

Found at Anthropologie.

These booties are so sweet and snuggly warm. And because they are Robeez, they actually stay on his wee feet.

Photobucket

I know, if I were a truly dedicated blogger, I would have put the booties ON Wyatt to show them off, but he was really happy in his sleep sack, and you don't mess with happy babies.

These little lovey blankets are the softest things! Amelia's "Buppy" was the bunny from this series, and she had to have it for sleeping with until a few months ago. We still love Buppy, even though he's no longer essential for sleep. Maybe little Lion will become Wyatt's bup.

Photobucket

I got a three-pack here (it's always good to have extras!)

I didn't realize until I saw all these gifts together, that Wyatt's Christmas had a bit of a lion theme to it - he also got this sweet thing

Photobucket

Wyatt also got some practical gifts, and he didn't mind one bit. He got more of these bottles, to help Daddy get through the day while I'm at work.

Photobucket

We used Avent with Sophia and Amelia, but they had changed their design when Henry was born and were pretty awful and extremely expensive. Thankfully they're good again, and we love them. Five-pack found here.

In his stocking, Wyatt also got another one of these favorite diapers

Photobucket

and some sleepers, wash cloths, a rubber ducky, a set of bamboo baby spoons, Sophie the Giraffe's cousin, my favorite baby wash (smells DIVINE!), and socks.

Photobucket

He got two blankets to go with his black stroller and I love both of them. This one will be great for cold or drizzly days, and I love that it clips on.

And this one is sooo cute with soft gray minky on one side!

Photobucket

Found on Etsy by my mom.

This was Sophia's favorite board book when she was a baby - she would get SO excited about it! Sadly, it literally fell to pieces from so much love, so Wyatt got his own copy

Photobucket

Shopping for a little baby wasn't nearly has hard as I thought it would be, even with a fourth child who has pretty much everything he needs!

Things I Love - Baby Sleeping Softness Edition

I am getting a blog make-over after Christmas, and I am SO excited! I've had tons of blog posts stirring in my mind, but also have a lot of updating to do (see that pregnancy ticker on the left there? That baby is now 9 weeks old!) One of the things I've wanted to do is a series of posts about products that I love and find myself recommending to everyone. So, here is Part I... I have a horrible track record with multi-part posts (how many MONTHS has it been since I've done a Vegetable of the Week post?!), so don't hold your breath for Part II ha!

I'm pretty sure I never outgrew the babydoll-dressing part of childhood, because I love dressing my babies. I especially love getting them dressed for bed - getting them all comfy cozy after a bath and baby massage. It feels like wrapping them in love, when I get them snuggled up. Here's what Wyatt has been snoozing in lately.

Photobucket

Gerber side-snap long-sleeve shirt. Washed in Dreft and 7th Generation fabric softener, these are so soft. I want some for me. And because they are side-snapping, no need to make baby mad by pulling them over his head!
Thirsties Duo jersey hemp prefold diaper. The softest diapers in the world. Yummy soft. Secured with a Snappi - best lets-stop-putting-pins-on-babies invention ever.

Photobucket

Over the prefold diaper, a wool soaker. I've gotten really hooked on diapering with wool. We still usually use THESE diapers during the day for both boys. But at night especially, I love wool. It is so breathable, never leaks, and, I don't know, I just love it. This one is a Kissas Wool Lover cover. You guessed it - SO SOFT!! I also have some wool soakers and longies from Etsy I love and some recycled wools I am making - that's a separate post.

Photobucket

And top layer - a LullaBag by Cloud B. I bought these when Sophia was a baby and I love them because... well, they are soft. Is there anything more important than softness when you're sleeping??! They are toasty warm and natural cotton, and they unzip on the bottom for diaper changes. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore (thankfully for me, I bought a BUNCH when Sophia was a baby). But there are plenty of other adorable soft-looking sleep sacks out there - like these.

Wishing you much softness at night, whatever your age!
