Mother's Day

Despite being a day that made me reflect on being a better, more patient mother, yesterday was also a very sweet day with my kids. Before the whole iPhone/church-screaming/blood-drawing fiasco, we had breakfast. I wish I had taken a picture - the girls decorated the table with ribbons and tablecloths and other decorations they found around the house. They invited guests (baby dolls) to the party. Davis makes the best breakfasts, and I know he would have been more than happy to cook for me, but I have had my eye on a breakfast recipe that I wanted to make. It was creme brule French toast and oh my word! YUM!!! It was just like having creme brule for breakfast, which I have no issue with. Actually, later in the day, when I asked Sophia why she was acting up so much, she said "I think I had too much sugar for breakfast."

The girls drew sweet pictures for me, and Sophia gave me a really cute art project and some bulbs from the school garden (when I asked her what kind they were, she said "flowers" ha!) Amelia missed school on Friday to attend Sophia's kindergarten program (more on that when I get the pictures in) so I will get her Mother's Day gift from school today. I love that schools do this - because kids love giving gifts, especially surprises, and this let's them do it without leaving it up to Dad to come up with something! Davis gave me a big hydrangea bush, which I am SO excited about, because all of our hydrangeas died last year and I miss them!

For dinner, I made one of my favorite meals and one of the first things I ever learned how to cook (the recipes are all my own, and one of the best compliments Davis gave me when we were dating was that my meatloaf and gravy was better than his mom's! Sorry Judy, but you know that's a good compliment because we love your cooking!!) One thing I knew I did NOT want to deal with on Mother's Day, was kids whining about what's for dinner! So I made something I knew everyone would love

I love watching Henry eat corn - he eats all the kernels off and then he sucks on the cob. He really, really loves corn!

Everyone ate a TON! Which meant they slept like rocks, which was really what I wanted for Mother's Day. This morning I had that terrifying thing that I know every mother goes through at least once - Henry was still asleep at 7:15 a.m. which is an hour later than he has EVER slept in his life. I freaked out and ran into his room, and of course he was fine, except mad that I woke him up.

For dessert, the girls wanted to make a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. We made this using Pioneer Woman's recipe from her cookbook, and it was super yummy!

Way better than the boxed mix kind. And even better for breakfast this morning ha ha! Hey, if you're going to eat creme brule for breakfast, why not red velvet cake?!

For my mama, I made some granola (picture taken in the car on the way to the UPS store last week)

I was so excited to see these half gallon jars on Amazon - that is a LOT of granola! I think I am making this for teacher gifts this year.

Hope your day was sweet!
